About SigEp Maine Alpha
Founded in 1946, the Maine Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Maine has a long-standing tradition of excellence and brotherhood. Officially chartered in 1948, our chapter began with 21 founding brothers, led by our first president, Douglas R. Johnson. Since its inception, Maine Alpha has proudly upheld the values of Sigma Phi Epsilon—virtue, diligence, and brotherly love—and has continuously worked to foster personal growth, leadership development, and academic excellence among its members.
A Storied History: Overcoming Challenges
The early years of Maine Alpha were marked by strong leadership and a growing presence on campus. However, like any long-standing organization, we have faced challenges that tested our commitment to our values. In the early 1990s, the chapter was placed on social probation due to violations of university policies. Unfortunately, in the fall semester of 1994, Maine Alpha violated the terms of its probation, leading to the loss of university recognition. Shortly after, Sigma Phi Epsilon’s national organization revoked our chapter's charter.
Despite this setback, the brotherhood and spirit of Maine Alpha never faltered. The chapter returned to the University of Maine in March 2000, starting with four dedicated brothers who laid the foundation for the chapter's revitalization. These four founders were determined to rebuild the chapter based on the core principles of SigEp while ensuring that Maine Alpha would operate in a way that was sustainable, values-driven, and focused on the holistic development of its members.
By the fall of 2001, Maine Alpha had not only moved back into its chapter house but had also regained its charter with a renewed commitment to excellence. One of the key promises made to both the university and the national fraternity was that Maine Alpha would be different from its past self. A significant change included maintaining a "dry house," meaning no substances or alcohol were allowed on the premises. This decision demonstrated our chapter's dedication to creating a positive and healthy living and learning environment for all brothers.
The Balanced Man Program: A Foundation for Growth
In conjunction with our return to campus, Maine Alpha embraced the Balanced Man Program (BMP), a progressive and non-pledging development model that sets SigEp apart from traditional fraternities. This program focuses on continuous, holistic member development and offers our brothers opportunities to grow in all areas of life. Whether it’s through leadership training, community service, or personal development workshops, the BMP ensures that every member of Maine Alpha receives the support and resources needed to excel academically, personally, and professionally.
The BMP has been integral to the chapter’s success since its re-chartering in 2001. This program encourages brothers to embody the principles of virtue, diligence, and brotherly love, not just during their time at the University of Maine, but throughout their lives. Maine Alpha’s commitment to the BMP has allowed our chapter to become a leader on campus, known for producing men who are well-rounded, goal-oriented, and committed to making a positive impact on their communities.
A Positive Campus Presence
Since our return, SigEp Maine Alpha has flourished as a chapter, consistently making contributions to the University of Maine community through leadership, academic achievement, and service. Our brothers regularly hold leadership positions in student government, clubs, and athletic teams, and we are proud of our chapter’s strong academic record, which frequently exceeds the university's average GPA.
Maine Alpha has also taken an active role in philanthropy and community service. We host annual events to support local causes, including our long-standing partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Additionally, our brothers participate in university-wide service initiatives and contribute to the broader Orono community, embodying the spirit of service that is central to Sigma Phi Epsilon’s mission.
A Legacy of Leadership and Brotherhood
For over 75 years, Maine Alpha has been a home to men who go on to make a difference in the world. Our alumni network is vast and includes leaders in a wide variety of fields, from engineering and business to public service and education. These strong alumni connections continue to benefit our chapter today, providing mentorship, career opportunities, and support to our undergraduate brothers. Many of our alumni regularly return to the chapter to share their experiences and offer guidance, ensuring that the lessons learned through SigEp extend far beyond college.
Our chapter’s journey—marked by challenges, resilience, and a commitment to growth—demonstrates the strength of the Sigma Phi Epsilon brotherhood. We are not defined by setbacks but by how we rise above them and strive to build a better future for ourselves and those around us.
